When I first became a caregiver for a person with dementia, I learned the importance of memory, in particular what do to with the hole left by the absence of memory. Recent memories appearing on the surface seemed to grow increasingly more difficult to round up, like fireflies escaping from an uncapped jar, or jellyfish morphing in shape and disappearing into the deep blue, difficult to distinguish from the darkness.
The older experiences swam deeper and found hiding places that I always seemed to find a way to illuminate. I learned how to deepen the impression of new memories by giving them color.
